Writing Quote Friday

Today’s quote comes from Mickey Spillane…

The first chapter sells your book. The last chapter sells your next book.

  1. Florence,
I found the quote in an old Writer’s Digest and immediately loved it…especially in light of the first sentence contest going on right now :).

  2. It’s a great quote to remember as we’re polishing our stories. I might go even farther to say it’s the first and last paragraphs, or even sentences, that are vital. Of course we could pull it all apart and point out that if the story in between isn’t great, a reader isn’t likely to pick up the next book regardless of the ending. But that’s getting picky. I like Mickey Spillane. 🙂

  3. Carol,
Congrats again on your great interview over at Romance Writers on the Journey!

Oh how I love getting picky with my novel. Analyzing word choice and the deeper meaning to both the character and the storyline as a result of those choices…I’d do it all day if I could 🙂

    Thanks for stopping by,

  4. Shari,
Thanks for stopping by. You had the nicest comments for your mom for her interview, such a pleasure to read your interaction. :).

  5. Laura,
I loved this quote the first time I read it, especially since it conveys such a hard, honest truth about the “business side” of writing :).
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I hope you’ll be back.
