Writing Quote Friday

Today’s writing quote comes from Stephen King

“Making people believe the unbelievable is no trick; it’s work. … Belief and reader absorption come in the details: An overturned tricycle in the gutter of an abandoned neighborhood can stand for everything.”

    • A.,

I totally agree about the tricycle. When I read that a bunch of images and colors of the scene came to mind and I immediately understood what King was meaning by this quote.

      Happy Easter!

    • Florence,

I’m ashamed to say I haven’t read his book yet. I think I’ll remedy that today by wandering over to Amazon…

Congrats again on your Write it Sideways contest!

    • Deborah,

Stephen King is one of my favorite writers so I feature quotes from him quite often. If you have any quotes on writing that you like I’d love for you to share :). Send to me via email and I’ll give credit to you and a link back to your blog.

  1. I’ve been meaning to read King’s book on writing for years. What am I waiting for?!

This is a great quote, and it raises a question. Why do details sometimes draw you in when you’re reading a book, but other times just distract you? I think it takes practice to learn to use details effectively.

PS – Just what the world needs – a new blog! I launched mine yesterday. Come visit! http://monicagudlewski.blogspot.com

  2. Comfy,

I’m so glad you liked this quote. Stephen King always has the best ones and I’ve found he’s my “go to guy” when I need a really powerful quote.

    Thanks for visiting!
