Writing Quote Friday

Today’s quote is from Ernest Hemingway…

Forget your personal tragedy. We are all bitched from the start and you especially have to be hurt like hell before you can write seriously. But when you get the damned hurt, use it-don’t cheat with it.

  1. Florence,

I have one scene in particular where I really used my own experience to shape the character’s actions and emotions. It’s where my lead female character has to say “good bye” to her best friend she’s known since birth. I used my own experience saying good bye to my best friend since junior high (she was leaving to live across the country when my babies were only five months old)

We still keep in touch nearly every day by phone, but back in 1843 that wouldn’t have been possible, and sending letters would be unreliable at best 😦
