What Do YOU Think I Should Buy?

I just got a (belated) birthday present…a $25 gift card to Amazon. I can use it for Kindle, or just a “regular” purchase on Amazon.

I want to stock up on the “How to Write” type of books, so I ask…

What should I buy?

  1. If you don’t have that Stephen King book, “On Writing” I recommend it! It’s a stupendous mashup of writing tips, recounts of his own writing experiences and of experiences in life that have influenced his writing.

  2. Christi, I agree that Stephan King’s is a superior book on writing, not to mention a great semi-autobiography of his life.

If you can believe in coincidences, I opened my mail today to find a recommendation from amazon. They “bundle” your likes from old searches. Below is a link to a writing book they recommended and below that are other selections. I have not read them, but they seem to be different takes on the craft and may be of interest to you as well.

Have fun with your gift certificate and good luck on your search 🙂

  3. I would like to smack someone at WP for knocking me out today. Doing this for the second time (in case you get both) … I agree that King’s book is one of the best, not to mention a great semi-biography on his life.

I got this link from amazon this morning. Below the one book are several others you might also like. Have fun with your gift certificate and good luck with your search for a book on our craft 🙂 http://www.amazon.com/dp/0385480016/ref=pe_171100_23231860_pe_epc_dt1

  4. Yes, agreed On Writing is terrific.

I’d recommend, Save the Cat! excellent screenwriting book that applies equally to fiction writers. So many wonderful techniques in that book!

And I’m reading a book that has helped me amazingly called: Showing and Telling, by Laurie Alberts. It really hones down scene structure, summary, the different types of scenes, their uses, and much more. I was really pleasantly surprised by this book–I thought there would be nothing new in it at all, but so far it’s really helped me tighten my writing.

I’m interested to see what’s recommened to you–always on the lookout for great books about the craft.
