Another Release for Annie Douglass Lima!!!

Take a look at this exciting new young adult action and adventure novel, The Student and the Slave, now available for purchase! This is the third book in the Krillonian Chronicles, after The Collar and the Cavvarach and The Gladiator and the Guard

The series is set in an alternate world that is very much like our own, with just a few major differences.  One is that slavery is legal there.  Slaves must wear metal collars that lock around their neck, making their enslaved status obvious to everyone. Another difference is the popularity of a martial art called cavvara shil.  It is fought with a cavvarach (rhymes with “have a rack”), a weapon similar to a sword but with a steel hook protruding from partway down its top edge.  Competitors can strike at each other with their feet as well as with the blades.  You win in one of two ways: disarming your opponent (hooking or knocking their cavvarach out of their hands) or pinning their shoulders to the mat for five seconds.

Is this what freedom is supposed to be like? Desperate to provide for himself and his sister Ellie, Bensin searches fruitlessly for work like all the other former slaves in Tarnestra. He needs the money for an even more important purpose, though: to rescue Coach Steene, who sacrificed himself for Bensin’s freedom. When members of two rival street gangs express interest in Bensin’s martial arts skills, he realizes he may have a chance to save his father figure after all … at a cost.

Meanwhile, Steene struggles with his new life of slavery in far-away Neliria. Raymond, his young owner, seizes any opportunity to make his life miserable. But while Steene longs to escape and rejoin Bensin and Ellie, he starts to realize that Raymond needs him too. His choices will affect not only his own future, but that of everyone he cares about. Can he make the right ones … and live with the consequences?

***********************

MAMARAZZI COVERDanica Bennett isn’t sure what she hates more…her job or the fact that she’s good at it.  As one of the many Hollywood paparazzi, she lives her life incognito and sneaks around trying to get the best shot of the latest star.  When she is mistaken for an extra on a new, up and coming TV show, her own star rises and she becomes the one being photographed.  Add that to the fact that she’s falling for her co-star, Eliot Lane, and Danica is in a whole heap of trouble.

Mamarazzi Excerpt

She wasn’t sure what bothered her more…what she did for a living or the fact that she was good at it.

As she bent over her last creation, she wondered how it would affect their lives. That was just it…her occupation affected people. And not always in the way she hoped.

It certainly wasn’t what she’d planned to do with her life. But at that point, it was as close as she could get. She had to eat. The cost of living rose every year. With any luck, she would get her foot in the right door eventually. Until then, she had to do what was necessary.

She placed the photograph into a cardboard envelope to keep it safe. It was a good thing she remained anonymous. No one would even think about allowing her near them if they knew who she really was. Her set up worked well for the time being. She mailed her work to her agent and her agent distributed it to the interested parties. The checks made their way back to her with her agent’s name on the header.

One day she hoped to be a real artist. All it took was one picture. A print she could put her name on with pride. Then, everyone would notice her work. She would be the photographer she wanted to be. She’d stand tall when she cashed her checks. No more cloaks and daggers or hiding out. No more anonymity.

Until that day arrived, she would have to go by the nickname the tabloids gave her. They called her the Mamarazzi. They knew she was a woman, but that was it. Mystery surrounded her work, and as long as she delivered the goods, her pictures remained the center focus. She was one of the best paparazzi on the streets. She got the picture the magazines all wanted every time.

She hoped the demand for her work continued. She liked having what everyone wanted. She’d keep her fingers crossed that she could change the overall job title someday. She held onto optimism.

As she wrote her agent’s name in block letters on the outside of the envelope, she shuddered. Thank goodness she wasn’t in the photo within. But she had to eat. She’d make up for it. Someday. Somehow. She would go back and do good things for each celebrity she hurt. It was her solemn promise. And the only way she could sleep at night.

Note from the Author on the book’s inspiration:

I’ve always been fascinated by the Hollywood life and the idea that “they” are different from “us.” The idea for Mamarazzi has been with me for a long time. I’m not even exactly sure when I came up with it, but in college, I had a screenwriting class and I had to write a portion of a screenplay. I wrote “Paparazzi,” which was the same general idea only with a male lead character. When I began writing romantic comedy, the idea came back to me and I decided to chance the main character to a female and call it “Mamarazzi.” I even had a naming contest so that facebook fans and blog readers could name the characters in the book. Every character in the novel is reader named and approved! Overall, I wanted to examine what happens when you take someone from one side of the fence and plop them on the other side. In the end, famous or not, we’re all just people. And in this book, they all have secrets…
